Knife Making Forging Course

This beginner knife making course is open to anyone over the age of 16 years.

On this internationally accredited training course you will learn how to make a survival knife from a piece of metal using primitive fire forging techniques. The skills you will learn include …

  • The principles of knife making.

  • How to select the right metal for making a knife.

  • How to select and safely use the right tools for knife making.

  • How to use a gas fire forge safely to heat metal.

  • How to shape a piece of metal into a blade with a hammer.

  • How to temper and harden a knife blade.

  • How to finish the knife blade.

  • How to fit a knife handle.

  • How to sharpen a survival knife.

  • How to make a leather sheath for your knife.

This is a 1-day course and we have a 2-day course option available for the Western Cape branch.

We start at 08h00 and finish at 16h00.

You will need the following kit to complete the course :

  • Water bottle

  • Hat or cap

  • Notebook and pen

The complete kit list is available to download from the course page for the 1 and 2 day courses.

You will sleep under a waterproof survival tarp for the 2-day course.

We have safari tent accommodation available at the Western Cape training branch. Please enquire about our special student rates.

Due to the course being very full and limited time, students need to bring their own lunch for the 1-day course.

For the 2-day course we provide meals for the evening and breakfast the next morning.
